Have you heard of Buhurt?

Fun fact: buhurt means "to wallop" in Old French.

Buhurt (or armored combat or Medieval MMA) is an extreme full-contact sport where a fighter wears full medieval armor & fights with (dulled) steel weapons. The fights are not choreographed, planned, or rehearsed. They are true fights of skill, determination, & grit.

It's so much fun!

On September 14th, I saw a reel with a female knight fighting in a melee. I immediately shared the reel with my husband, declaring boldly that I wanted to do that. That evening, I was able to find a local(ish) buhurt team in Tucson & reached out to them via their website. The next day, I received a reply & made plans to check out their team practice in six days.

Within a couple of weeks, I was suited up in loaner gear, learning the basics in footwork, fighting against Ent-sized knights, & signing up for my first event.

I hit the ground running with this sport!
I have no plans on stopping anytime soon! 11-year-old me, who was devouring the Lioness Quartet series by Tamora Pierce, is dancing around in circles with glee that adult me is finally a knight!
Childhood dream come true!

It is important for fighters to invest in their own gear so they can improve on their fighting skills & know that the armor will protect them accordingly.

Currently, I am still wearing loaner armor. Loaner armor are pieces of gear that my other teammates do not use anymore & have set it aside for new fighters to wear when we arrive to check out the sport. Most of my teammates are much larger than me so the gear does not fit me well.

My goal is to have my very own kit by Summer 2026.
